Preparing for an Open House - What to Know!

 Make a great first impression. The minute your home hits the market you want to address the curb appeal. Freshen up the landscaping and exterior by removing debris and leaves. If your home needs some updates, consider putting some money into a new paint job or a new front door and hardware. Take a look at you mailbox and walk the property with the eyes of a potential buyer. 

  • Clean gutters and windows.
  • Check and replace outdoor light bulbs, if needed.
  • Buy a new welcome mat. 
  • Give the front door and porch a wash.


 Set a welcoming mood. Do your best to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home. You want to evoke a positive and comfortable environment where buyers can imagine their own families.

  • Open all windows to air out the property before the open house. Keep curtains and blinds open.
  • Light a subtle candle or plug in an air freshener.
  • Play some tasteful music in the background.
  • Keep the room temperatures comfortable depending on the time of year.

Stage your home with furniture and accessories. If you're living in your home, consider some small touches such as neat, fresh towels in the bathrooms, a vase of flowers in the entryway, some throw pillows on the sofa. With furniture, keep things simple and consider repaiting any wild-colored or damaged walls.

  • Keep accessories neutral.
  • Consider adding artwork to bare walls.

Remove clutter and personal items. If your house has an overflow of clutter, furniture or knick knacks, it may be hard for buyers to see the features of the home. You want your home to feel clean and streamlined so viewers can move about the property with ease.
  • Find a discreet home for family photos.
  • Ensure the refrigerator is free of magnets and other personal effects. 
  • Clean spare rooms and full closets.
