Here are a few tips from the Fran Campbell Team to help you get started:
- Consider the ever changing season of Missouri – we have lovely seasons, but the temps vary dramatically. Make sure you plan your garden for all seasons by purchasing a selection that includes spring, summer/fall, perennials and annuals. The key is to design a space that has a continual bloom from spring to fall.
- Check sun exposure – Determine the level of sun exposure in your space and make sure you purchase flowers that will thrive in the allotted space.
- Limit the use of colors – you want to add bursts of color but you want to avoid chaos. The theory “If a little bit is good, then a lot is better” – not the case in your flowerbed. You want a nice mixture of colors and neutrals (green)
- Height and Texture – Evaluate your space and read the labels on the plants before you purchase. Once you have purchased, PLAN before you plant. While they are still in the containers, place them throughout the garden to get a better idea of what your finished project will look like. Remember to take into consideration the height and space needed for the full grown plant, the colors of the blooms, and the texture of the plant.
- Final touches – consider adding mulch, edging or solar lights. These final touches really determine the overall look of your flowerbed and give it a “finished” look.
